You Generated a Solar Return Chart. Now What?

You put your data into a free calculator. You hit generate. What came back was a wheel full of glyphs and precisely zero instructions for what to do with it.

I get some version of this question constantly, and it's almost never "what is a solar return." People have usually already read that part. What they actually want to know is narrower: I have the chart in front of me — what am I even looking at?

It's Not Read the Way Your Natal Chart Is

Here's the part that trips people up first. A solar return isn't a standalone chart you can interpret on its own terms, the way you might with a natal chart. Every placement in it only means something in relation to two other things: your natal chart underneath it, and the timing techniques laid over the top of it — profections, in particular, which activate a different house and its ruling planet for each year of your life on a fixed rotation.

Skip either of those, and you're not really reading a solar return. You're reading a chart that happens to be cast for your birthday.

What Actually Carries the Weight

A few things matter more than the rest: the sign and condition of the solar return Ascendant, which planet rules it and where that planet lands, which house is holding the most planetary activity, and whether the planets closest to the angles are benefics — Jupiter and Venus — or malefics — Saturn and Mars. None of those are good news or bad news read alone. A year with Saturn prominent isn't a year to dread; it's often the year that produces something durable, precisely because it demanded more of you.
